The Australian Institute of Polish Affairs (AIPA) unequivocally condemns two alarming incidents that occurred in Melbourne in recent days — the arson attack on the East Melbourne Hebrew Congregation and the violent, targeted protest outside an Israeli restaurant in the CBD on Friday, 4th July, 2025. This appalling act of hate is an assault not only on the Jewish community but on the values of tolerance, dignity, and coexistence that define a civil and democratic society. We express our deep solidarity with Melbourne’s Jewish community and affirm our unwavering support for their safety, freedom of worship, and cultural expression.
This incident is a disturbing reflection of the alarming rise in antisemitism both in Australia and globally. From physical attacks and vandalism to online hate and Holocaust distortion, antisemitic rhetoric and violence are once again poisoning public discourse. History has taught us the catastrophic consequences of allowing such hatred to fester unchecked.
As an organisation committed to fostering Polish-Australian dialogue and historical understanding between Polish and Jewish communities, AIPA acknowledges the unique responsibility we bear in confronting antisemitism in all its forms. We honour the deep and painful history shared by Poles and Jews — a history that must serve as a call to conscience in times like these.
We urge Australian leaders, institutions, and communities to stand together in defence of our shared humanity. We urge law enforcement to thoroughly investigate these crimes and ensure that those responsible are held accountable and brought to justice.
There is no place in Australia — or anywhere — for antisemitism. We stand with our Jewish friends and reaffirm our collective commitment to remembrance, justice, and peace.
