Expert in international security, human rights activist from the 1960s and member of the Solidarity opposition in the 1980s. Former Vice-President of the European Parliament and Vice President of its Foreign Relations Committee. He was Defence Minister of the Republic of Poland in two separate post-1989 governments. He is on the Executive Board of the UK-based European Leadership Network, Chairman of the International Center for Democratic Transition (Budapest) and a member of the Polish-Ukrainian Partnership Forum. He is a recipient of numerous international awards and honours, including the Légion d’honneur. (2017)
